Gerri Atrik here with my 1st report from the field, a lovely sojourn in Ireland for 10 days gave us insight into the EU mindset, at least, northern division. I hope you enjoy it. If you don't, then fuckoff.
The island is, as it is commonly known to be, quite green and stunningly beautiful, both within and around the edges. I believe that in a way the island has survived unchanged over the past 150 years after the famine partly because so many humans left. the island had a chance to avoid the overpopulation and destruction that would have occurred. in other words, the island was given a stay by the governor, allowing it to catch its breath.
having said that, the remaining "stay at homes" or "left behinds" folk are a lovely, friendly & civilized bunch. the contrast from here to there is stunningly stark. they treat each other more kindly---every day. Their housing is basic, modest, without ostentation, and well-maintained; This is true even in the tiny-sized poorer sections of Dublin & Killarney. For the complete island, it is obvious that pride of place is the default setting throughout the socio-economic spectrum. As to their roads, their condition always a good indicator of how well the government provides quality life, they are well-maintained, with rarely encountering a pothole over 1,300 kms of driving. Outside Dublin there is no litter. Towns, even touristy ones, are pretty much spotless. What is most stunning is that by and large, the population exudes a high level of unity & equanimity, something that is slipping away here. No doubt they have their problems. But EH tips its hat to a small country that is at peace with itself and the people around them..... including even me, the lowly tourist.
