a lifetime fave...worth rereading:

The Story of Ferdinand, by Munro Leaf; illustrated by Robert Lawson

The plot of Ferdinand is deceptively simple: A bull who wants only to sit quietly under a tree is mistaken for a fierce beast and sent to a bullfight. There, he refuses combat, instead smelling the flowers in the ring. The tale may seem like a classic misfit story about a boy who doesn’t fit in with his head-butting peers. But unlike many other literary outcasts, Ferdinand is never ashamed to be different; he remains peaceful in a violent world. That was a divisive message when the book was published, with the Spanish Civil War under way and World War II approaching. Critics called Ferdinand communist, fascist, pacifist (as well as anti-pacifist), and emasculating; Adolf Hitler banned it for being “degenerate democratic propaganda.” Today, as many warn of a crisis of masculinity, Ferdinand’s unwavering gentleness feels refreshing. Leaf writes that the bull resisted fighting “no matter what they did”—a level of fortitude that may inspire children, even if some adults are more cynical.  — Kate Cray

your phone is making you miserable

Put your phone down for three days and watch what happens. Researchers just proved that taking a break from your smartphone delivers mental health improvements that rival antidepressant medications. In their four-week study, 71% of participants reported improved mental health, and 73% felt better well-being after unplugging. The science is straightforward: less screen time means lower stress hormones and more stable levels of dopamine and serotonin. Even a 24 to 72-hour break significantly lowered stress and improved sleep quality. The withdrawal symptoms hit early with irritability and restlessness, but push through them.

Spend time outdoors, engage in genuine conversations with people, and allow your nervous system to calm down. The researchers found that participants who took regular breaks maintained a better emotional balance in the long term.

Young people, in particular, benefit from these digital detoxes. We’ve created a world where constant smartphone use feels mandatory, but the data says otherwise. Three days without your phone might be the best mental health decision you make this year. Why not start doing it? Just plan, for instance, your next weekend phone-free. Your brain will thank you.
