yes, it is winter here in new england. and right now we have a typical seasonal cold spell. if you've been here you know people in this part of the country do not don smiley faces easily, especially in winter. but this year our cub reporter has noticed that the facial pattern has changed. He notes that they are the most strained than he's ever seen. not even compared to the day of 911. Ursus says on the street and in the supermarket it is easy to garner a cross section of your town's population. if one had to describe its facial characteristics, EH would use: scared, angry, painful, sullen, worried & fatigued. Add to that, in typical New England tradition, very little direct eye content when the opportunity presents itself.
when EH had our offices in the Back Bay during the first 15 or so years of the 2000s, we always remarked that the locals wore a frown in the street and that the only people who smiled were the recent immigrants preparing and delivering our meals & earning minimum wage. Now, no one smiles except the kids in strollers. Humans = Strange
