Chinese EVs in the fast lane

Hundreds of thousands of visitors and hundreds of exhibitors will race to Beijing this weekend for one of the world’s biggest motor shows. Over ten days at the Beijing Auto Show, Chinese battery- and EV-makers will debut new models and technologies. Ahead of the show CATL, the world’s largest battery-maker, unveiled a new battery that it claims can be recharged from 10% to 90% in six minutes, beating BYD’s best effort of nine. (Both say their batteries deliver around 1,000km of range.)

The show comes at an opportune moment. The war in Iran has pushed up petrol prices, making alternatives more desirable. But China’s EV market has descended into a savage, three-year price war, caused by chronic overcapacity. As a result, Chinese automakers are increasingly looking to go global. China already makes roughly 70% of the world’s EVs and 85% of its battery-cells. The Beijing Auto Show will reveal how much further its firms are pulling ahead of the pack.

I'd just as soon call the plumber....and go to the gym instead to have to do all that to unclog a drain....but this is well worth it for the wonderful soundtrack....marvelous!

and, in happy news.....

WORD OF THE DAY:

Synodality (from synod which is Greek σύν "together", and ὁδός "way, journey") in the Catholic Church is a term "often used to describe the process of fraternal collaboration and discernment that bodies" like the Synod of Bishops "were created to express".[1]

the college of cardinals conclave that picked our new Sancte Pater knew exactly what they were doing.  Pope Leo needs no translation services.  He speaks English with a Chicago accent and completely understands exactly what the Don says, and why he does what he does,....fully.  The accent is affectionately named by linguist scholars, "Al Capone English".

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

BEFORE WE START: WHY THIS IS THE MOST DANGEROUS COMPANY IN THE WORLD

Forget ExxonMobil. Forget Lockheed. Forget Facebook, Raytheon, Pfizer, BlackRock, every villain you’ve been trained to point at for the last thirty years. Those companies are dangerous the way a loaded gun on a table is dangerous — inert until somebody picks it up, and usually somebody does, and usually people die, and we write books about it afterward.

1️⃣ WHAT PALANTIR ACTUALLY IS — AND WHY THE NAME IS THE WHOLE TELL

What it is: Palantir was founded in 2003 by Peter Thiel, Alex Karp, Joe Lonsdale, Stephen Cohen, and Nathan Gettings. Its two products — Gotham and Foundry — are the connective tissue of the modern American surveillance state. ICE runs on it. The IRS now runs on it. The Pentagon runs on it. The NYPD and LAPD run on it. The Israel Defense Forces run on it while they flatten Gaza.

It’s named after the palantíri — the seeing stones in The Lord of the Rings that let their holders watch everything, everywhere, all at once.

Here’s the part Peter Thiel’s English degree apparently skipped: in the books, every palantír that survives the Second Age gets corrupted by Sauron. Every single one. The stones drive their users insane. Saruman looks into one and switches sides. Denethor looks into one and sets himself on fire.

They named the company after cursed objects, and then they acted surprised when the curse took.
